Total freakin' crack.

Holy crap - June 6th, Apple announces that they're moving to x86 Intel (something I thought would _never_ happpen), and Debian Sarge is released. Add to that the fact that Microsoft are now using PowerPC (Xbox 360), and the IT world I know has totally flipped. The sky is falling!

Hello Sarge!.

Finally!! The Debian project just released “Sarge” as the next stable release. After more than 3 years of intense development and all us poor schleps living with “Woody's” antiquated (but stable) packages, we can finally have an updated and stable debian. Congrats to the Debian community and may Sarge kick some serious butt. Debian is still one of my favorite distro's, if nothing but for apt-get.

Now, can someone tell me why Debian stable has Firefox version 1.0.4 and Ubuntu still only has 1.0.2 - which is based on Debian. I'd have thought that Debian would still be at Firefox 0.91 or something. There's always a good reason to know how to install packages yourself manually - this is a good case in point.

Anyway, congrats once again Debian hackers - nice work.

[Debian][Ruby] sargeの次のリリースに向けての目標のようなもの

目標というかTODOというか、単にメモというか。次のリリースまでにやっておきたいこと:

安定版Rubyをできるだけ安定な状態で提供する

1.8系は基本的に安定版だからとCVSから変更を取り込んでいたけど、今回のリリースに際していくつかの点でミスを犯してしまった。Ruby自体の開発(保守かも)の進められ方にもよるけどBTSを基本にして困っていると言われたタイミングで物事を考えるようにしてみようと思う。

メンテナンスするパッケージを減らす

今の時点で42パッケージある。sargeがリリースされたのでRuby 1.6系はフェードアウトさせるとして、そうするとRuby 1.8に含まれる15くらいのパッケージはメンテナンスしなくてよくなる。それ以外のパッケージのうちの3つか4つくらいはRuby 1.6系用だからこれらも不要になる。残りは25個くらいだが、ruby{1.8,1.9}とあといくつか、それにbdb関係をいれて10個くらいに減らしたいところ。

Apple WWDCのstreamingを観ながら書いているんだけど、結局のところPCで走るMacOSXは出るのかなぁ。。

PCにインストールできるMacOSXが出るのならLinuxと競合。僕ならクライアントマシンはMacOSXにするか。

Linux入れてみるのも楽しいので、Debian 3.1はとりあえず試してみます。
